W.A.R.N.(Worker
Adjustment and Retraining Notification
Act) is a federal law which requires employers
with 100 or more full-time employees to give 60 days notice of plant
closing or mass lay-offs.
This law became
effective February 4th, 1989. The purpose of W.A.R.N.is to assure
that affected workers and communities as well as state and local
governments are given an opportunity to prepare for the planned
closing or mass lay-off. In this manner, advance notice provides
workers and their families with some transition time to adjust to
the prospective loss of employment, to seek and obtain alternative
employment and, if necessary, to seek retraining opportunities that
will allow these workers to compete in the job market. The law also
provides state and local units of government and affected communities
with an opporunity to prepare for the impending dislocation by planning
retraining and worker adjustment programs for the affected workers.
